Our Story

Over Two Centuries of Aromatic Excellence Since 1816 The story of Gulabsingh Johrimal began in 1816, during the final years of the Mughal era. Lala Gulab Singh, an entrepreneur from Jhajjar in present-day Haryana, arrived in Delhi with a vision that would eventually become one of India's most enduring fragrance legacies. Together with his son, Lala Johrimal, he established a traditional perfumery in the heart of Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi's historic marketplace. What started as a humble fragrance shop soon earned the affectionate name "Gulab Gundhi Ki Dukaan"—the Shop of Gulab the Perfumer. The word Gundhi, derived from the Sanskrit Gandha, signifies fragrance, perfectly reflecting the family's lifelong devotion to the art of perfumery. From the royal courts of Mughal nobles and Nawabs to connoisseurs, artists, and fragrance enthusiasts from around the world, Gulabsingh Johrimal quickly became synonymous with exceptional craftsmanship and timeless aromas. For more than 200 years, the House has stood witness to India's remarkable journey—from the Revolt of 1857 and the Freedom Movement to Independence and the modern era. Generations of customers have walked through its historic doors, drawn by authentic Indian attars and incense that transcend cultures, religions, and borders. The original store continues to preserve its old-world charm with antique Belgian-cut perfume bottles, handcrafted wooden shelves, and the timeless tradition of offering customers a drop of attar on the back of the hand. Today, the eighth generation of the Gundhi family proudly carries forward this extraordinary legacy, preserving the traditions established over two centuries ago.
